(KNSI) – A teenager became hypothermic when he tried to drive a snowmobile across Little Rock Lake Friday and hit open water.

The boy was able to climb out and began to walk back to shore toward a fish house near St. Regis landing. An angler picked him up on a snowmobile and got the teen back to land. Benton County Sheriff’s deputies said in a release that they met the boy and began treating him, along with firefighters from the Rice Rescue Squad.

Mayo Ambulance took the teen to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment. The sheriff’s department says to be careful when on the ice. Cold temperatures have not yet helped conditions firm up following a record-warm start to winter.

The incident happened about a half mile from shore. The boy told deputies he tried to bring his sled to a complete stop when he saw open water ahead of him, but he was unsuccessful. The snowmobile has yet to be pulled from the water. The incident happened at about 11:30 a.m.
