(KNSI) – Xcel Energy is sharing tips to reduce your power usage as we endure a blast of frigid air for the first time this winter.

The utility says wholesale natural gas prices are already on the rise, and arctic temps are expected to affect the country from near coast to coast into next week. The financial impact is not expected to reach the level of 2021, which consumers are still paying for as part of their monthly bills.

Xcel says to keep your thermostat between 65 and 70 degrees when you are home and at 58 when you’re at work or out on the town. Open blinds during the day to let the sunshine filter in through the windows. It also recommends double-checking doors that lead outside to ensure they are completely closed.

If you flip your fan’s setting to run clockwise, it forces warmer air near the ceiling down towards floor level. When cooking, use the oven light to check on what’s baking inside. Xcel says any time you open the door, the temperature drops 25 degrees, and the appliance must reengage to regain the temperature.

Insulation is important for everything from your water heater to doors, ducts, and windows. Crawl spaces, floors, and walls are other things to take a look at to ensure there is no leakage.

The last tip is to replace your air filter. If you skip regular maintenance, furnaces must work harder, which increases the amount of energy used.
