(KNSI) – A Minnesota Timberwolves all-star will teach the next generation of hoopsters the tricks of the trade in St. Cloud on Saturday.

Karl-Anthony Towns will host a one-day basketball camp from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Whitney Recreation Center. Program Director Jorgen Erickson grew up in central Minnesota and tells KNSI News he doesn’t remember an NBA pro of this caliber ever coming to town. “It’s huge, just being a basketball fan. And you know, it’s one thing that it’s you know, if it’s a professional athlete, or if it’s a retired guy, but being the guy in his prime for the hometown team, who’s been there eight, nine years now, at this point, I think it’s pretty cool and special.”

KAT and local coaches will take around 200 kids through drills and teach them what it takes to succeed in basketball and life. The sessions are for children between six and 16 years old.

Erickson hopes the camp starts a tradition of pros coming to St. Cloud.
“Whether it’s a semi-annual or an annual event, having some sort of pro athlete of some caliber coming up here wanting some sort of a camp for kids, I think, really enriches the community. And again, I’m biased because I’m from around here, but I think it’s well-deserved.”

The program is being put on as a partnership between FlexWorks Sports and the city. There’s room for a few more ballers.
