(KNSI) – The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the man shot in the arm in St. Paul by a police officer Saturday morning.

The agency says a preliminary investigation shows 31-year-old Brett Kohl Fraser was injured after officers rushed to an apartment building on the 400 block of Thomas Avenue just after midnight. A caller said he could hear a man physically and sexually assaulting a woman and that the man had a handgun on him.

Officers knocked on the door of the apartment, identified themselves, and Fraser tried to flee. Eventually, they were able to get the woman out of the unit. Officers confronted Fraser in a small hallway, where he is alleged to have charged at them.

One of the officers fired three rounds, hitting Fraser in the arm. He was given treatment at the scene, taken to the hospital, and has since been released back into custody of the St. Paul Police Department.

Forensics teams found a replica handgun inside a backpack at the apartment. The BCA says it is still checking bodycam video from the incident, and it will present its findings to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office when it is finished investigating.
