(KNSI) – A former speaker of the Minnesota House says he is stepping down.
GOP Rep. Kurt Daudt led the lower chamber starting in 2015 in just his third term in office. It was the first time a speaker rose through the ranks so quickly since the early days of the Great Depression in 1930.
Daudt was first elected in 2010 and was the face of a Republican majority from 2015 to 2019. He says, “I’ve been fortunate to play a role in enacting historic tax cuts, game-changing education reforms and school choice initiatives, making historic investments in our roads and bridges, and advancing pro-life and pro-Second Amendment legislation.”
Daudt hails from District 27B, which consists of nearby Princeton and Zimmerman. His successor as head of the GOP caucus is Lisa Demuth of Cold Spring.
Daudt’s retirement becomes official on February 11th. A special election will be held for the seat later this year.
