(KNSI) — An employee in St. Cloud State University’s Garvey Commons dining hall for the past 30 years, has been served an extremely prestigious national honor.

Troy Kalla was awarded the Chartwells Higher Education’s Frontline Culinary Difference Maker Award. The award goes to someone who consistently dishes up excellence and great daily results with a healthy scoop of going above and beyond.

School officials say Kalla started unloading trucks before becoming the head grill cook where he works today.

Michelle Jacobson is the Director of Residential and Retail Dining. She says Kalla’s “ability to connect with guests and mentor student staff is unmatched. Troy’s kindness, dedication and demeanor creates an excellent environment to work in, and we couldn’t be prouder to have him on our team.”

Not only is Kalla busy making sure the SCSU students get fed, but he and his wife are also foster parents, having four children in their care since they began five years ago. They’ve officially adopted two of those children and plan to continue fostering.

“Providing a safe, loving, and consistent family dynamic for the children brings such joy to Heather and myself,” Kalla said. “Whatever we can do to give each child a loving home is our main goal.”

Garvey Commons just celebrated 60 years in August.
