(KNSI) – As your license plate tabs come due, you might notice an extra charge if you renew at your local office.

The Minnesota State Legislature okayed a $1 surcharge last session only when you pick up your tabs close to home rather than using the mail-in option through the Department of Driver and Vehicle Services.

A majority of the fees that come with license tab renewals already go to a state fund. The measure is to even things out as local DMV offices are struggling. A release from Wright County says two offices closed entirely this past year, and more are likely in the future, given the prevailing trend.

Another thing to note is that vehicle registration taxes are increasing next year. The rate will rise from 1.285 percent to 1.575 percent for cars first registered in the state before November 16, 2020. Everyone else’s rate bumps higher from 1.285% to 1.575% of MSRP.

The rate drops as the vehicle ages until it reaches a minimum of $30 annually in its 11th year and beyond.
