(KNSI) – Thursday’s KNSI radiothon comes at a pivotal time in the fight against Alzheimer’s.
Recent advancements in medicine and treatment are changing the nature of the disease. Minnesota and North Dakota Alzheimer’s Association Chapter CEO Sue Parriot says it can now be managed for the long-term in a controlled manner.
“The best part is, for the first time ever, we actually have treatments that will help slow down the progression of the disease. I’ve been at this for 12 years, and I’ve never been able to say that before, that we have treatment.”
Parriot says Alzheimer’s can be nearly halted so it is not debilitating. The treatments are administered every two weeks through an IV and are covered by Medicare and Medicaid.
Your money will also fund community classes, which discuss new research on how to avoid Alzheimer’s entirely. Parriot says to focus on your ears.
“Hearing loss is the greatest modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. So, I encourage you to go get your hearing checked, and if you need hearing aids, use those because it will actually help protect your brain, protect your cognition.”
Parriot says for the brain to stay stimulated, it needs to hear properly. That will allow it to think, solve problems, and stay sharp.
Several area businesses will match donations up to $500 each half hour. Voigt Johnson Real Estate, Williams Integracare, and Nyles Gentz Financial representatives will be in studio Thursday morning during the radiothon.
