(KNSI) – Two local groups helping some of central Minnesota’s most vulnerable are getting support from a state grant.

A total of $9.5 million in Live Well at Home grants has been doled out to 45 organizations. The Minnesota Department of Human Services awarded the City of St. Cloud’s Aging Services Department $438,000. The funds will assist residents in getting long-term services, support and mental health care, and encourage them to be social. According to the press release, a digital care companion pilot will keep older adults active and independent.

Helping Hand Outreach in Holdingford received $50,000 to recruit and train volunteers for respite services. The program gives caregivers a brief break from their duties.

All the money is meant to assist aging Minnesotans to stay in their houses longer with the help of caregivers, housekeeping, retrofitting rooms to prevent falls, and other aid. The DHS says research shows that people are happier and have better health when living in their homes longer than rather than moving into a nursing home.
