(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says warm temps aren’t the only anomaly recently when it comes to the weather. It’s also been dry, and with little to no snow around, brown grass and vegetation are exposed.

Wildfire Prevention Specialist Karen Harrison says forget what the calendar says, burning right now is dangerous. “Don’t be fooled because it’s December. Even with some scattered snow showers, burning vegetative debris is risky right now, especially with temperature increases and windy conditions predicted over the next week. We are asking people to consider delaying any planned burning until conditions improve.”

The agency says to wait until there are at least three inches of snow on the ground before you burn yard waste. This year, it is suggested that you compost or use a different method to dispose of leaves and brush.

The DNR says drought from the past few years enters into the equation, as well. Any fires that happen now, even if you think they are under control, could burn deep into the topsoil layer. A burn today could lead to a wildfire weeks or months down the road.

The agency also reminds people if you have a pile bigger than three feet across and three feet tall, you must get a burn permit.
