(KNSI) – Cocktail classes have come to central Minnesota, providing the tips you need to entertain like a pro. It makes a unique and practical Christmas gift that the recipient will be sure to appreciate.
Before you welcome coworkers or family into your house, learn how to serve the perfect drink. Obbink Distilling Mixologist Cass Watters goes over what’s on her Sazerac stained syllabus.
“I thought it might be a fun way to teach people how to do some of the things that a bartender might do, even for holiday parties in their own home. Little tips and tricks like chilling a glass before you serve a cold drink in it, how to measure things and get the appropriate ratios, and how to build a cocktail for a larger group.”
Each class runs about two-and-a-half hours. Appetizers, a take-home recipe guide, and more are included. You also get access to discounts on seasonal holiday drinks at Obbink. The cost is $100 per person.
At Obbink, Christmas in July is more than a marketing ploy. Watters says her eggnog has been in the works for nearly six months. “I made my first kind of test batch using a recipe by Alton Brown. That first rolling batch started in July and then it has a couple of tests here and there with different whiskies. And eventually, we settled on a blend and that aged eggnog stopped being made this month. Once it’s gone, it is gone until next year.”
Something else made with December in mind is an old-fashioned with peppermint liqueur and winter solstice Christmas edition whiskey featuring a warm spice profile.
Watters says she started her career as a server at the Red Carpet in St. Cloud but has taken the science of alcohol seriously, learning about mixing drinks, and now she is actively creating something new at Obbink Distilling in St. Joseph.
