(KNSI) — A St. Paul man is dead after he exchanged gunfire with a policeman Thursday afternoon. The officer has since been treated by Regions and released.

It happened around 2:00, according to a press release. St. Paul Police Department Public Information Officer Sergeant Mike Ernster, police were called to a domestic abuse no contact order violation when a woman said an armed man was following her. She said he was ramming her car and broke out windows in her vehicle before police arrived. Officers found the man who shot the officer in the leg.

The man has been identified as 24-year-old Brandon Daleshaun Keys. He was fatally shot in the head.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has taken over the investigation. Police were wearing body cameras that were activated at the time. The agency says there were numerous witnesses and surveillance video of the incident. They are taking everything into account as they look into what happened.

The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome.
