(KNSI) – A survey from AAA says safe drivers only make up 41% of people behind the wheel.

The Traffic Safety Culture Index asks a variety of questions and then slots individuals into six different categories. Almost 23% of drivers speed. Another 32% are distracted or aggressive while out on the road. The truly dangerous and impaired drivers combine to make up 3.7% of all motorists.

AAA says traffic volumes are still rebounding from the pandemic. They warn that fewer traffic stops are a big reason why risky behaviors are on the rise. The organization says fatalities are alarmingly high as a result as the roads become busier again.

That’s why the group is welcoming a holiday crackdown on impaired driving. Law enforcement agencies at every level across Minnesota are focusing on drunk or drugged driving from now through New Year’s Day.

Director of Traffic Safety Advocacy Jake Nelson says that will also mean a crackdown on speeding. He notes, “Many risky drivers in this study were classified into profiles that involved speeding behavior. Focusing on speeding drivers will deter other risky driving behaviors like impaired driving and red-light running. This traffic safety measure will have the greatest impact on safety.”

AAA says most drivers know that unsafe behaviors are dangerous, but many find them doing so anyway.
