(KNSI) – The official in charge of Minnesota’s elections will spend time in the classroom on a trip to St. Cloud.

Director of community engagement and communications for St. Cloud Area School District Tami DeLand gave KNSI the scoop on Secretary of State Steve Simon’s visit at Apollo and Tech High Schools on Friday. “He is including us on part of a statewide tour for engaging students around voting and elections.”

DeLand talked about what students he would be meeting with. “He is going to be visiting both government and US history classes at both Apollo and Tech. Some of them are general sections, and some of them are advanced placement.”

Many of the students are juniors and seniors. Minnesota passed new legislation in 2023 that allows 16- and 17-year-olds to preregister to vote. Their registration takes effect on their 18th birthday.
