(KNSI) – Thousands of Minnesota’s most vulnerable residents could lose their health coverage even though they qualify for help.

People on Minnesota Care and Medical Assistance were automatically renewed for coverage due to the federal emergency declaration brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The programs provide insurance for low-income families, children, older adults, and people with disabilities.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota’s Bukata Hayes explained that people are getting dropped from the rolls who shouldn’t be. “Between July and September of this year, the renewal process led to more than 100,000 people losing coverage due to the required paperwork not being returned or processed.”

It’s the first time reapplying has been required since 2020. That’s why he is urgently spreading the word that folks need to be active in this process. Hayes has some advice to make sure you keep your coverage. “Simply to make sure your address and contact information are up to date, because it is a physical package that is mailed to you, physical paperwork that you need to complete ASAP in return; not having the correct address or contact information impedes that process.”

About 1.5 million Minnesotans are covered by the state’s medical programs. To check your coverage status, click here.
