(KNSI) – A day that will forever live in infamy is remembered again.

The attack on Pearl Harbor stunned an entire nation and dragged the United States into World War II. The Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum will gather virtually this Thursday on Zoom for a program that will share the stories of local soldiers stationed at the base on December 7th, 1941.

The Japanese military attacked early on a Sunday morning, catching the headquarters of the Pacific Fleet off guard. Sixteen ships were damaged, with two lost forever. That includes the USS Arizona, where a bomb detonated in one of the ship’s powder magazines. Over 1,175 officers and crew were lost on that battleship alone.

Minnesota will forever be connected to the attack on Pearl Harbor. A gun on the USS Ward sank a Japanese submarine during the raid, officially the first American shot fired in World War II. That gun sits outside the state capitol in St. Paul. You will have a chance to learn other incredible facts from that dark day during the roundtable.

You can register for the 7:00 p.m. Thursday event here. The program is online only. The museum will not have a physical facility for the public to visit until 2026.
