(KNSI) – Some people aren’t showing any holiday spirit as scammers target small businesses and residents in central Minnesota with fake demands for unpaid taxes.

Mille Lacs County has been alerted by several people about letters threatening to seize property for failing to pay taxes. One mechanic got a letter asking for over $11,000. The letters appear to come from the state. Officials say they are not legitimate.

The sheriff’s office warns people to be aware of these letters. Deputies say demand for payment would only come from the local auditor/treasurer’s office with the money owed to the county, not the state.

Police say you should not send any money or respond to the scam letters.

Call your county auditor treasurer if you have questions or concerns about a property tax letter or statement.
