(KNSI) – Foley’s version of Great Christmas Light Fight starts on Friday.
That’s when judging begins for the city’s annual decorating contest. Everyone who lives in the city limits is automatically eligible. Assistant City Administrator Sara Judson-Brown explained they started keeping track of the winner in 1989, but the tradition goes even further. “Folks really do get excited about it. It’s a lot of fun. It’s been going on for a long time. And I think generally, it’s just an opportunity for people to have some fun, where they get some bragging rights in the neighborhood if they’re able to win. There is some stiff competition.”
A panel of super secret judges will be patrolling the city from December 1st through the 10th. Judson-Brown offers some tips to those trying to impress those judges. “If people really put in the time and attention in the detail, that definitely goes a long way. Or, put something up that maybe they haven’t seen before. [They] like a little creativity that definitely draws their eye. But you need the wow factor to really make their eyes pop.”
Judson-Brown says the event helps people get in the mood for the season and brightens people’s moods. Homes are judged on outdoor displays only. Three winners will receive $100 in Foley Bucks to spend at Main Street stores.
There is also a category for local businesses.
