(KNSI) – St. Cloud Area School District 742 has been awarded $2.5 million to launch two full-service community campuses.

The new programs will be at Discovery Community School in Waite Park and North Junior High in St. Cloud. On Tuesday, District 742 learned they are one of 30 getting funding from the U.S. Department of Education and the only district selected in Minnesota. They will get $500,000 annually for the next five years. Twenty community organizations, including the United Way of Central Minnesota, will participate in the program.

A full-service community school provides education and more social support, such as food, dental, vision, and mental health services. According to a press release, students learn better, have increased attendance, and are more engaged when their needs are met.

The first year of the grant is for planning, which will begin in January.

Nationwide, USDE says they will dole out $74 million in FSCS grants.
