(KNSI) — The Stearns History Museum will go “Back to the Future” and turn on the neon lights to a time when big hair bands and the Cold War were red hot.

Executive Director Amy Degerstrom says the museum is celebrating its current building’s opening in 1984 by examining that decade. “We’ll be spending our time and energy focused in and around the 1980s in Stearns County next year, which has got potential for lots of fun.”

The 40th anniversary celebration will include a 1980s car show, 80s cover band music, and a Skate in Place the Night in August. Degerstrom explained they’d also tackle some things that in history in the 80s were more challenging in Stearns County, like the farm crisis. “The 1980s were very hard for people who were doing that job here. There was a lack of funding. Their weather patterns were not good. There were political and economic depressions during that time.”

The museum will also explore the yuppie era’s music, movies, toys, political upheaval and culture.

You can help prepare the display by donating authentic 80s appliances, furniture, or other gadgets. No toys are needed.

Make sure to bring your leg warmers when the exhibit opens in May.

On June 30th, the museum will hold an event to celebrate the building’s 40th birthday. The Stearns Historical Society was first formed in 1936.
