(KNSI) – Drought conditions were little changed last week, both locally and across Minnesota.
It doesn’t look like there is much help coming over the next seven days, though. Sunny skies, warmer than average temperatures, and high winds are forecast.
Northeastern Stearns County and the northwestern corner of Benton County are still in severe drought. Moderate drought makes up the rest of the eastern half of Stearns County, all of Benton County, and about 99% of Sherburne County. The remainder of the listening area is abnormally dry.
Statewide, about 44% is in drought, with under a fifth of Minnesota being in the severe or extreme drought stages. Some deterioration is possible in the coming days.
Sustained winds of up to 15 miles an hour are expected until Friday night. Gusts will pick up to 25 miles per hour on Monday night and Tuesday. On Thursday, they’ll be as high as 30 miles an hour. Lows will stay above the freezing point, allowing the wind to dry out the ground again.
The U.S. Drought Monitor takes soil readings each Tuesday morning. An update is released on Thursday.
