(KNSI) – Whether it’s a pastrami on rye, a BLT on toasted wheat, or a good old fashioned PB&J cut the fancy way, today is the day to celebrate the lunchtime staple of the sandwich.

November 3rd is National Sandwich Day.

Good to eat any time of the day or night; there are several different stories surrounding how the sandwich was named.

Portable, convenient and delicious, the most widely believed of the legends has it that the name for the sandwich came from John Montagu, who was the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Sandwich is a town just inland from the North Sea, County Kent, England. A British statesman, Montagu loved to play cards and would ask for meat on bread to be brought to him at the gaming table. It sustained him over long periods of play, didn’t get his hands dirty and didn’t require a fork.

Others, recognizing his genius, would ask for the “same as Sandwich,” and it was eventually shortened to just “sandwich.”

Several national chain restaurants are offering deals to gobble up today. Offers are valid at participating locations only:

  • As part of the recurring Domino’s Mix & Match deal, customers can order two or more menu items (including sandwiches) for just $6.99.
  • Firehouse Subs is donating a portion of each purchase of the King’s Hawaiian Pork & Slaw Sandwich to the Hawaii Disaster Relief Fund to help rebuild following the devastating wildfires that leveled the picturesque Lahaina area of Maui.
  • Jersey Mike’s Subs is offering free delivery for orders placed through the app.
  • Jimmy John’s rewards members will score $1 off mobile orders.

Local restaurants may have their own deals and specials today. Regardless, it’s worth stopping in and grabbing a bite.

Fries or chips, pickle or no, mayo or mustard, bon apetit!
