(KNSI) — Minnesota has been designated a tech hub by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), Minnesota MedTech Hub 3.0 was chosen as one of the 31 inaugural Tech Hubs in regions across the country that show potential for rapid growth in key technology sectors.

According to a press release, a board led by Minneapolis Saint Paul Economic Development Partnership will position Minnesota as a global center for “Smart MedTech” by integrating artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science into medical technology. The state was chosen for its concentration of hospitals, research institutions, and medical device manufacturers. The panel chose Minnesota thanks to places like the Mayo Clinic, Boston Scientific, the University of Minnesota and Medtronic.

“Medtronic is proud to be a leader in Minnesota MedTech 3.0 alongside so many other great partners,” said Medtronic Chairman & CEO Geoff Martha. “This is a tremendous opportunity for Minnesota, and we’re committed to using our resources to ensure the success of this Tech Hub.”

This designation is part of the first phase of the novel Tech Hubs program, authorized by the CHIPS and Science Act, which was signed into law in August of 2022.
