(KNSI) – Minnesota Sixth District Congressman Tom Emmer is dipping his toe into the topsy-turvy race for Speaker of the House.

Kevin McCarthy of California, who was removed from the role earlier this month, has officially endorsed Emmer, saying, “He is the right person for the job. He can unite the conference. He understands the dynamics of the conference. He also understands what it takes to win and keep a majority.”

KNSI News can confirm that Emmer is now working behind the scenes to rally support for a potential candidacy for the United States House of Representatives’ top post. Republicans hold a narrow 221-212 majority after last year’s elections, and the caucus has been unable to coalesce behind a leader that can bridge the gap between its moderate members and grassroots favorites.

Representatives Steve Scalise (Louisiana) and Jim Jordan (Ohio) have already failed to secure the 218 votes needed in the past week. When Scalise was still a candidate for speaker, Emmer was floated as majority leader, the number two position in the caucus.
