(KNSI) – Sartell-St. Stephen’s football team is asking fans to pink out the stands for its 10th annual Tackle Cancer game.
During Wednesday, October 18th’s home contest against Park Center, the Sabres ask fans to wear pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but the team will also be playing for others who have battled cancer.
Head Coach Scott Hentges explained to KNSI News that this game’s stakes are a little higher. “We always talk about playing for more than just yourself, and a lot of times we talk about playing for teammates and so on. But you’re really playing for somebody else. I think it just gives it a little bit more meaning.”
Senior Will Brinkerhoff told KNSI News the game is personal for him. “My aunt, who’s a mother of eight, actually got diagnosed a couple of years ago with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. And just a couple of weeks ago, my good buddy Scott got diagnosed with colon cancer. So, I’ll be playing for them.” Players will be wearing pink accessories.
Senior Will Mathiasen expects the stands to be full. “More people show up obviously, because more people want to donate. It’s a whole other level of energy on nights like this, because people really want to support the cause and they can show it by supporting the football team.”
The community is raising money through jersey sales, donations, and at the game with a pass the helmet event. Last year, the team raised $1,500.
All the money goes to the Randy Shaver Cancer Research Fund.
The game is sponsored by St. Cloud Subaru and St. Cloud Financial Credit Union.
