(KNSI) – MEA Weekend means many Minnesotans will travel far and wide for a short vacation.

Explore Minnesota PR Specialist Jake Juliot says if you are driving, there are great options that are less than a full tank of gas away. Juliot says many will choose a short trip to the Twin Cities.

“Mall of America is our largest attraction in the state, and there’s plenty of great activities for the whole family there. From an amusement park to a cinema to great shopping with over 520 stores, plenty of things to do. But there’s also some great museums for families, as well, like the children’s museum and the science museum in St. Paul.”

If you are trying to keep things educational but looking for a smaller destination, Juliot says Itasca State Park and the Headwaters Historical Society near Bemidji provide a chance to learn outside. He also points to Grand Rapids and the Forest History Center, a reenactment of an old logging camp.

When asked by KNSI for a hidden gem to try out, Juliot suggests Leech Lake. He says, “One of my favorite places is Walker. I love the Leech Lake area, and I think that it’s a great place because there’s so many great resorts along that area. Small ones, big ones, all sizes, perfect for families. They’ve got Reeds Sporting Goods if you’re going to do some fishing or if you’re going to do anything out on the water.”

Another option is to stick to central Minnesota. Nothing says fall like a cidery. Milk and Honey Ciders near St. Joseph is recognized as one of the best in the state.
