(KNSI) – The University of Minnesota Board of Regents officially approved the academic affiliation agreement between the University of Minnesota Medical School and Centracare to develop a new regional campus in St. Cloud.
The school in St. Cloud hopes to welcome its first class of 24 students in the fall of 2025. The St. Cloud campus will be the first expansion of the medical school in more than 50 years. There are two other locations in the Twin Cities and Duluth.
The organizations can now start the process of applying for accreditation. Development of the St. Cloud campus includes an investment in facilites, construction, student housing, programs and services, research, residency programs and scholarships.
The Minnesota State Legislature approved $15 million in funding to begin this important work during the 2022-2023 session: $5 million for the design of the facility and $10 million for support of the program. The CentraCare Foundation also launched a $50 million community philanthropy campaign to support the endeavor.
In December, the board of regents will review the financial agreement between UMMS and CentraCare, with action anticipated in February.
