(KNSI) – The Benton County Attorney’s Office has filed 12 charges against the suspect accused of shooting at police who were serving a warrant at his house Thursday morning.

Among the charges against Karl Thomas Holmberg are six counts of attempted murder, one for each officer he shot at. Five of them were hit.

Several members of the Sherburne County Drug Task Force attempted to serve a knock-and-announce warrant at Holmberg’s house in Glendorado Township. According to the criminal complaint, Holmberg had an exterior camera with a screen in their bedroom and was watching the officers approach.

According to body cam footage reviewed by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the officers clearly and articulately state that they have a warrant to search the property before entering. When they reached the living room, Holmberg opened fire with a .223 rifle.

All five are expected to survive. Two officers were hit in their bullet-proof vests and have been released from St. Cloud Hospital. Another was released Thursday evening after being shot in the hand. Two others are still at North Memorial Medical Center. One was struck in the right arm, another was hit in the chest and hip.

The criminal complaint says Holmberg did not believe the officers had a right to be at his house, which is why he opened fire. Several weapons were recovered, along with ammunition from the scene.

The other six charges include first-degree assault – deadly force against a police officer.
