(KNSI) – A CentraCare doctor was given a prestigious award for helping transform mental health care in Minnesota.
Emergency Psychiatric Assessment Treatment and Healing Unit (EmPath) Director Dr. Larry Hook was recently honored by the Minnesota Medical Association with the President’s Award.
In 2021, his advocacy led to the opening of CentraCare’s EmPATH unit. Dr. Hook’s dedication to expanding programs to address addiction and psychiatric disorders was pivotal in reshaping mental health care in the region. Because of his work, CentraCare has been able to start more consultation services for mental health and drug use disorders.
The EmPATH Unit became a reality thanks to a generous $1.2 million donation from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. According to CentraCare, mental health issues are the sixth most common reason for emergency room visits.
