(KNSI) – Weather wreaked havoc on sporting events across the state this weekend.

Lightning and heavy rain postponed many area high school contests on Friday evening. ROCORI and Sauk Rapids football were forced to finish their games on Saturday. That was even after the Storm had pushed up the start time for their showdown at Elk River to 6:30 p.m.

Cathedral hosted Paynesville at St. John’s University for homecoming, which was aired on the KNSI Sports Network until the end of the third quarter. The game was suspended to Monday evening. Not every game was affected. Holdingford football went to Osakis and was able to finish on time.

After the rains swept through, record-breaking heat settled in. The Twin Cities Marathon was canceled by organizers early Sunday because of the dangerous conditions. They called off the annual event about two hours before the scheduled start time.

The event was supposed to be a qualifier for the Boston Marathon next year and had drawn entrants from across the country. There was a severe backlash to the decision, and many took to the course anyway, crossing the finish line after an unsanctioned race.

The heat sticks around through Tuesday before seasonably cold weather hits. By Friday, high temperatures will be in the low-50s. Frost is possible at night.
