(KNSI) – The weekend’s heavy rains helped alleviate the worst of the drought in Minnesota.

Exceptional drought has disappeared entirely, and extreme drought fell from 26% of the state to 8%. Rain is in the forecast again next week after a brief run above 80 degrees over the weekend, which should continue to chip away at the deficit that built up over the summer.

St. Cloud did not benefit significantly from the rain last weekend, but eastern Benton and Sherburne Counties did. The latest readings from the U.S. Drought Monitor show extreme drought dropping in Sherburne County from 100% to under 20%. Extreme drought went from affecting all of Benton County to about 40%.

Stearns County saw the least movement. Roughly the eastern third is still in extreme drought. The central portion is in severe, and moderate drought dominates in the western end.
