(KNSI) – CentraCare is offering free prostate exams on Thursday afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The screenings come with some conditions. They are for men between 45 and 70 years old with no history of the disease. The tests would be done at the Coborn Cancer Center, which is hosting the event in conjunction with the CentraCare Urology Clinic and Laboratory Services. Appointments must be scheduled beforehand by phone at 320-229-5100.

Prostate cancer is common in men. The American Cancer Society says roughly one in eight will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. In a press release, CentraCare says that screenings help with early detection.

Discovering the cancer in its first stages of development makes it easier to treat and improves outcomes. The survival rate for prostate cancer when it is still local is nearly 100%. The figure drops to 32% if it has spread to other parts of the body.
