(KNSI) — According to its latest Uniform Crime Report, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says violent crime decreased in 2022.
The Uniform Crime Report summarizes crime data submitted by local law enforcement agencies.
The latest stats in the report show violent crime decreased statewide by 8.6%. It is even lower in greater Minnesota, dropping by 12.9%. The National Institute of Justice, violent crime includes murder, manslaughter, assault, robbery, rape and sexual assaults.
According to the report:
- There were 182 murders in 2022, down 9.5% from 2021. Firearms made up 70.4% of the weapons used, down from 73% the year before.
- There were 2,329 rapes reported in 2022 and 2,472 in 2021, a decrease of 5.78%
- There were 3,266 robberies reported in 2022 and 3,991 in 2021, a decrease of 18.16%.
- Offenses involving aggravated assault totaled 10,342 in 2022 in Minnesota compared to 10,967 in 2021, a decrease of 5.69%.
- There were 12,144 burglaries reported in 2022 and 14,429 in 2021, a decrease of 15.83%.
- There were 84,830 thefts reported in 2022 and 88,644 in 2021, a decrease of 4.3%
- There were 628 arsons reported in 2022 and 716 in 2021, a decrease of 12.29%
- Motor vehicle theft rose 12.9% in 2022, with 16,743 vehicles stolen compared to 14,829 in 2021. The 2022 total is the highest since 2001.
- Carjacking incidents decreased 23.2%, with 598 incidents in 2022, compared with 779 in 2021, the first year this data was collected.
- Bias crimes fell in 2022, with 168 incidents reported.
Law enforcement use-of-force incidents involving discharge of a firearm dropped in 2022 to 18, seven fewer than in 2021.
There were 859 law enforcement officer assault incidents reported in Minnesota for 2022, with 1,062 officers assaulted. There were no law enforcement fatalities in 2022.
Sheriff’s departments reported 6,737 employees in 2022, an increase of 1% from the 2021 total of 6,650. Police departments reported 7,002 employees in 2022, an increase of 0.2% from the 2021 total of 6,986.
