(KNSI) – An air quality alert has been extended until 9:00 a.m. on Thursday.

The air quality alert covers the western half of Minnesota, including Stearns County, due to wildfire smoke from Canada. Northwest winds will gradually clear the smoke from north to south.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued the alert earlier this week due to fine particle pollution caused by the smoke. The Air Quality Index is expected to reach the orange or unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Sensitive groups include people with lung disease, asthma, heart disease, and children and older adults. These groups should limit time outside or heavy exertion. Keep windows closed to prevent smoke from getting indoors.

The alert was originally set to expire at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
