(KNSI) — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has extended an air quality alert to include the St. Cloud area.
The Air Quality Index is expected to reach the orange or unhealthy for sensitive groups category today.
Heavy smoke from Canadian wildfires began affecting the Red River Valley Tuesday evening, and that smoke moved east overnight, reaching central Minnesota early Wednesday morning. The poor air quality will stick around through Wednesday, and the impact area will expand if needed, but as of Wednesday morning, it includes Benton and Stearns County.
Forecasters say the air quality will improve from north to south on Wednesday.
The alert is set to expire at 6:00 p.m.
