(KNSI) – Many seniors are heading back to class, spending their golden years taking a bite out of a golden apple or two.
Foster grandparents act as mentors and build confidence in students. They primarily help kids become better readers. About 98% of students who read to a foster grandparent improve their literacy skills over the school year.
Volunteers also mentor children and teenagers in math and science, assist with art projects and shop classes, and provide a little extra TLC as kids tackle their ABCs. Foster grandparents work in local schools, at area Head Start programs, and with various nonprofit agencies.
Foster Grandparent Program Director Sara Heurung says, “Our volunteers serve as tutors, mentors and friends to kids who need them most. We are grateful for their efforts, and for the lives they change each school year.”
The local Foster Grandparents program is run through Catholic Charities in conjunction with AmeriCorps Seniors. Call (320) 229-4589 or toll-free 1-866-895-799 to learn more. You can also find details online here.
