(KNSI) — Tuesday’s heat tied a record in St. Cloud as the mercury hit 97 degrees.

The last time St. Cloud got that hot on August 22nd was in 1971. Records go back to 1894, even hotter than the Dust Bowl years.

The official observed temperature of 97 was at 3:53 p.m. for St. Cloud. The dewpoint was 78, making for a heat index value or “feels like factor” of 114. The highest observed dewpoint in St. Cloud yesterday was 79.

Automated Weather Observation Systems around Minnesota showed the highest heat index report was at the Princeton and New Richmond airports of 119.

The Twin Cities’ official high temperature Tuesday also set a record of 98, besting the old record by one degree, which was also set in 1971.

Wednesday’s air temperature is expected to reach the upper 80s, but high dewpoints could push the heat index back to near or into the triple digits. An excessive heat warning is in effect until 10:00 p.m.
