(KNSI) – A teen is bringing peace of mind to thousands of Minnesotans.
Makena Prevost is the driving force behind a new option for state drivers to include caregiver information on their licenses. It allows emergency responders to quickly figure out if there are one or more dependents who rely on a person who has been involved in an accident or is otherwise incapacitated. That lets law enforcement and state agencies provide support services until the person has recovered.
Prevost is a 14-year-old from Orono. The idea started as a community service project for her Girl Scout troop. She took it first to Sergeant Pete Ekenberg of the Corcoran Police Department.
Prevost and Ekenberg presented to the Office of Traffic Safety Driver and Vehicle Services division. Program Director Jody-Kay Peterson says, “The caretaker law is a simple but powerful tool that ensures the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals in our community. By providing this information in your DVS record, caretakers can have peace of mind knowing that their loved ones will be taken care of in the event of an emergency.”
The law went into effect on August 1st.
