(KNSI) — Travelers who plan to leave the country need to plan first to wait to get their passports.

An online appointment is required to apply for a passport in Stearns County, and appointments are being scheduled three weeks out. After the appointment, the current processing times for the U.S. State Department are ten to 13 weeks for routine processing and seven to nine weeks for expedited processing.

No appointment is required if only a passport photo or renewal application review is needed. Travelers can visit the Treasurer’s Office between 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for that service.

Some foreign countries require passports to be valid for at least three to six months after the final day of travel. Check the rules for different destinations here.

County officials also warn people to be aware of online scams promising quicker service.
