(KNSI) – Stearns County is helping residents upgrade antiquated or failing septic systems.

Three primary types of tanks have been grandfathered in but could not be installed today, including systems that discharge at ground level, empty out to a cesspool, seepage pit, or dry well, and have less than three feet of soil separation.

The county is offering loans with below-market interest rates of just three percent and a length of up to seven years for qualifying homes. If you are interested and think you are eligible, you can contact Stearns County Environmental Services at 320-656-3613. Applications are found on the county’s website.

Forbes says the average cost to install a septic tank is $6,300. If maintained well, they can last over 30 years.
