(KNSI) – Stearns County will continue to take written comments until its next board meeting regarding the use of marijuana in all public spaces.
The county commissioners held a public hearing on August 8th on an ordinance prohibiting the use of all cannabis products in parks, on the street, in outdoor venues, or any other place the public could gather. No private residents spoke at the hearing.
County Administrator Michael Williams told KNSI News his office will take written comments on the issue until August 21st. The county board is expected to vote on the ordinance on August 22nd, provided additional questions about the law are answered. Officials want clarification over how much restriction the county’s proposal will have on private businesses to allow marijuana consumption on its premises.
For public use to be allowed, an individual city must pass an ordinance that says it’s legal. Williams says the county rule would supersede all city and township ordinances on recreational cannabis.
Stearns County will wait to decide on the number of recreational dispensaries it will allow and whether commercial operations will be permitted. The law allows local governments to have some say over the number of retail locations based on population.
