(KNSI) – The untold story about the disappearance and 27-year search for Jacob Wetterling from the perspective of his mother will be released this fall.

Patty Wetterling will release the book ‘Dear Jacob: A Mother’s Journey of Hope’ on October 17th, just five days before the 34th anniversary of her 11-year-old son’s kidnapping at gunpoint. The memoir tells what happened and how Patty found her purpose. The book details how the investigation unfolded over the years, her family’s struggles and how she maintained her optimism and energy to keep fighting.

In the wake of Jacob’s kidnapping, Wetterling advocated for missing children and their families. Her work led to the passage of the Jacob Wetterling Act, which established the National Sex Offender Registry.

The book is a behind-the-scenes look at one of Minnesota’s most notorious crimes. The St. Joseph boy was found near Paynesville in September of 2016 after his abductor and killer, Danny Heinrich, made a plea deal with authorities and led police to Jacob’s remains.

Wetterling wrote the book with journalist Joy Baker and the Minnesota State Historical Society is publishing it.
