(KNSI) – Minnesota is the best state in the country for healthcare, according to the finance firm WalletHub.

Neighboring states Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota are also in the top 10, leading a strong contingent from the Midwest overall. Minnesota was better than average in the three main categories that went into the rankings. The state was first in overall health care cost, which factors in both insurance premiums and a trip to the doctor’s office or the hospital.

WalletHub says the average American spends almost $13,000 per year on personal health care. A top overall ranking for cost means savings of thousands of dollars annually compared to other parts of the country. Minnesota also ranked well in access to care at 7th overall.

The state was 15th for outcomes, which measures mortality rates for infants and mothers, life expectancy, and rates of cancer, heart disease, and stroke, among other factors.
