(KNSI) — A martial arts studio in St. Cloud is celebrating after an outstanding showing at a national tournament.
Six students and one teacher took home some hardware at the United States Soo Bahk Do championships held in Loveland, Colorado, last weekend. The Korean-based martial art tradition focuses on stand-up fighting with your fists and feet.
Master instructor, and 8th-degree black belt, Bill Nelson runs the St. Cloud Soo Bahk Do Martial Arts Training Center and told KNSI News he’s proud of how they did. “I’m pretty happy that they did well in the competition. These kids just really did a good job of being in a new environment and adapting to it. And they didn’t drop their discipline at all.”
He says martial arts helps kids with more than getting in shape physically. “I really think for kids, and especially parents, the basis of the philosophy is about discipline and respect, and humility and honesty.”
The studio, at 223 7th Avenue South, took seven fighters to the national tournament.
