(KNSI) – Top Gun: Maverick is cleared for takeoff in Sartell.

A grant to the Sartell Police Department is allowing the city to show the film in Pinecone Central Park on Thursday, August 3rd. The projector will begin rolling at 8:30 p.m. with free popcorn provided. Drinks and other food will be available from Mr. Twisty, which is staying open late for the event.

Engagement Director Nikki Sweeter says the movie night is designed for two different groups. “They were really trying to aim at maybe older kids and parents who could come into the park and watch a movie together or a date night for couples. That was the other kind of thing we brainstormed [that] would be kind of nice to be able to have.”

Sweeter says the 2022 smash hit is the first showing of what the city expects to become a summer tradition. She says, “That’s the plan moving forward is to make this an annual event. Hopefully, we can continue getting some grant funding or if we can’t, you know, maybe we find a sponsor in the future or something. But for this year it worked out pretty well so it happens with the grant funds.”

Sweeter says Waters Church is showing Super Mario Brothers this weekend. Other city events over the next two months include the dedication of the Tom Bearson Courts on August 5th and the opening of the new inclusive playground at Lions Park on September 10th.
