(KNSI) – Canadian wildfires are again prompting an alert about the air quality in virtually all of Minnesota, including the St. Cloud area.

MN MPCA

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is raising its color alert to orange or unhealthy for sensitive groups from 8:00 a.m. Friday through 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

The air could cause issues for people with lung disease, asthma, heart disease, children, and older adults. Area residents should close windows to keep smoke from getting indoors. People should cut down on strenuous outdoor exercise or activities during the day.

Smoke from wildfires in Alberta and British Columbia will move south across Minnesota following a cold front on Friday. The sinking air associated with the cold front will push smoke elevated in the atmosphere down to the surface. The air quality will gradually improve on Saturday with clearing across Minnesota from north to south. The alert may need to be extended depending on how fast the smoke dissipates.
