(KNSI) — Two St. Cloud high school students are being honored for bringing home a national title.

Apollo senior Fatuma Hassan and freshman Shyla Gordon have been awarded first place in the senior division of Community Problem Solvers, and the pair also won the Beyonder Award, the highest honor a community problem-solving project can be given. It is the first time anyone from Minnesota has won the Beyonder Award.

CmPS uses a six-step process to apply problem-solving skills to a real-life challenge. Hassan and Gordon have worked on the project together for the last few years. Called “Who’s on the Otherside.” Their piece focused on the problems with young people online who are groomed by predators and offers safety tips.

The national competition was held in late June at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
