(KNSI) – From groundbreaking to grand opening in mere months. The new Granite City Gymnastics building in St. Joseph will be up before you know it.
Owners Thomas and Amy Rodine put shovels to dirt last week. The facility is expected to be completed in October. The move from Waite Park is necessary due to explosive growth at the club.
Thomas says, “We’ve been in our current location for 16 years. It started with 44 gymnasts and four coaches and we have built it up to a place where we are now about 500 strong and we have 24 employees.”
The new building will have a mezzanine level making it easier for parents to watch their children during class. New equipment, including in-ground trampolines and foam pits, will be included as well, says Amy. She adds that the building can be completed so quickly because they have been working on plans for it since early 2022.
Thomas says most of the gymnasts do it for fun. He explains, “The difference between the recreational and the team — Recreational usually come in once a week, just for the experience and to burn off some energy. And our team gymnasts come in, [and] end up competing for us during the winter months.”
Over 400 fall into the recreational category. The 90 team members have a legacy of success to uphold. Alumni at Granite City Gymnastics include state champions Marley Michaud of Sartell and Taylar Schaefer of St. Cloud.
Thomas tells KNSI News that they do not plan on having competitions at the new building. They host one each year at Apollo High School and travel for the rest, anywhere from the Twin Cities to other states.
