(KNSI) – An annual exercise testing the response of first responders, along with federal, state, and local agencies to a simulated emergency at the Monticello Nuclear Plant is scheduled for Tuesday.
There will be a variety of field exercises at the facility, which straddles the border between Sherburne and Wright Counties. This week’s training is being overseen by the United States Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA. A dry run for the drills was completed on Tuesday, June 6th.
The field exercises are required by the State of Minnesota each year. They alternate between Monticello and Prairie Island. The drills have been conducted since 1981.
Included in the drills are representatives from Xcel Energy, 11 state departments, the City of Monticello, Sherburne and Wright Counties, and the United State Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
