(KNSI) – Officials are releasing details on what led to an officer-involved shooting in St. Joseph last week.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says the incident started on Tuesday, June 20th, after police responded to reports of 38-year-old Jason Patrick Cully making threats. When officers arrived, he pointed a gun at them and ran away. Cully then called the police and continued to make threats, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. On Wednesday, June 21st, at about 5:00 p.m., members of the Stearns/Benton SWAT Team tried to serve the warrant when a member of the SWAT Team saw Cully run across the yard toward a neighbor’s house. Cully ignored multiple commands to stop and drop his weapon and instead pointed his gun in a SWAT team member’s direction. The officer fired three shots, one of which hit Cully. A handgun was found at the scene.
Cully was rushed to CentraCare-St. Cloud Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. No one else was injured.
The officer is on standard administrative leave while the BCA’s investigation continues.
There is body camera footage of the incident, which is being reviewed. Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will turn over its findings to the Stearns County Attorney’s Office for review and any possible charges.
